Buckle up chickadees, because today I want to tell you about the worst play your friend the blogger has ever had the misfortune to witness, and the only play I have ever had to escape from (i.e, ran down the backstairs and left at the interval).
Continue readingShot through the heart: Assassins at Chichester Festival Theatre
Once almost considered to be part of the ‘lost season’ at Chichester Festival Theatre, snatched away from audiences by the pandemic, Assassins finally takes to the West Sussex stage, albeit three years late. With great expectations and a truly stacked cast of musical theatre talent, has it been worth the wait?
Continue readingRockin’ the Bridge: Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre
Based on the 1950s short stories of Damon Runyon, Guys and Dolls is a certified golden oldie of a musical. Populated by showgirls, high rollers, gangsters, dodgy detectives and Save-a-Soul missionaries, it’s a tale of risk, reward and really, really good dancing.
Continue readingOlivier Award 2023 Nomination Reactions
“Oh y’all wanted a twist?”
Well, there are certainly some to be found in this year’s round of Olivier Award nominations, announced earlier this week to the usual mix of delight, disdain and distress (Bonnie and Clyde snubbed? Surely not!).
Continue readingFix up, look sharp: Sylvia at the Old Vic
Ladies and gentlemen. Loyal and casual readers. I would like to present to you my biggest, greatest, ultimate ‘I told you so’ of my entire life.
Because Sylvia at the Old Vic is a goddamn masterpiece. Officially.
Continue readingShows I Won’t Be Seeing in 2023
Following on from my blog looking ahead to this year’s theatre, I thought I’d whip up a rundown of shows that I definitely won’t be seeing in 2023. These are in no particular order, and are personal preference; I’m not judging you if you want to see these shows, it’s your money and your freedom to choose, you just won’t see me there. Which is a definite negative, tbh.
Continue readingMr Sulu, you have the stage: George Takei’s Allegiance at Charing Cross Theatre
First things first; the staging choices for this production are baffling. Baffling. For reasons unknown, Charing Cross Theatre have decided to chuck out their usual proscenium arch in favour of sandwiching the stage between two slices of audience. A sort-of thrust stage, which leaves the poor actors awkwardly clambering out from behind various curtains in order to make their entrances, and causes all sorts of visibility issues for anyone from row D back. First of all; why? And secondly; …why??? There is nothing, absolutely nothing whatsoever, in George Takei’s Allegiance that wouldn’t work just as well, if not better, on a proscenium stage.
Continue reading2023: Looking Ahead
Rioter! Where the hell have you been, loca?!
Yeah I know, I know, I disappeared off the face – largely due to a combination of poor mental health (things took a DIVE in early 2022, hoo boy) and the whole cost of living crisis thing making attending theatre shows A Struggle.
And for that I can only say – my bad.
Continue readingTake me back to the drugstore: The Great Gatsby/Immersive Great Gatsby, Gatsby’s Mansion (ImmersiveLDN)
Okay, not to be that person who’s all like ‘I liked it better before,’ but damn…I liked it a lot better before.
Continue readingREVIEW: We’ve Seen Enough at Canal Cafe Theatre
We’ve Seen Enough follows the trials and tribulations of ‘Actress’, an otherwise unnamed, everywoman figure, flitting from disaster to disaster, but always managing to wring the humour from even the most mortifying situations. Written and performed by Rebecca Rayne, this 45-minute solo show is well observed and witty, if in need of sharpening.
